4 Pricing Myths and the Strategies to Bust Them

When you’re a manufacturer or a wholesaler, figuring out a sound pricing strategy can be tricky. Maybe you’ve heard that offering bargain-basement deals or simply calculating materials + overhead + time guarantees your sales will soar. In fact, competitive pricing takes more than just a mathematical formula or a deep discount. We asked three established wholesalers/manufacturers to bust four common myths about pricing—and to offer up a few reality checks of their own. Spoiler alert: Their insights may surprise you!

Meet our pricing myth busters:

David M. Krysak owns H4Legs Brand Pet Products, a Minneapolis-based company that designs, patents, manufactures, and sells pet products including the best-selling medical wound dressing called H-Leggings. Kim Hawkins is president of Events Wholesale, a discount event- and wedding-supply company in Watkinsville, GA. Samuel Tang is the owner of Joy Creations, a custom jewelry boutique in Ottawa, Canada.

Pricing myth #1: You have to manufacture your products overseas if you want your company to succeed.

Reality check: “Made in the U.S.A.” is a powerful strategy for driving competitive pricing—and strengthening brand identity.

David M. Krysak is proud to say that H4Legs’ pet-related products are made entirely in the U.S.A. Yet Krysak, who is also a management consultant and owner of Krysak Industries, is realistic about the downside of this decision.

“The elephant in the room for U.S. manufacturers is imports. We could make a lot more money if we manufactured and imported everything from somewhere else.”

How does H4Leggings compete? By recognizing that customers in the pet industry are willing to pay more for U.S.-made products. Showcasing the words, “Made in the U.S.A.” helps H4Legs hold its own in a crowded and competitive marketplace. “Our customers recognize the value of a unique product, which allows us to stand out in a saturated sector,” says Krysak.

Manufacturing stateside is a boon for brand loyalty, too. Customers feel good about paying a little more for a leash or a dog bed because they’re supporting the family-owned businesses across the country that make products for H4Legs.

Pricing myth #2: You’ll make more sales by offering the lowest prices.

Reality check: Price your products too low and customers may question your commitment to quality.

When Kim Hawkins first started selling budget-friendly wedding centerpieces, tablecloths, and event props on eBay back in 2006, she made a surprising discovery. “I realized that offering the very lowest price isn’t always the best idea,” she says. Some customers associate bargain pricing with low-quality products. Now, Hawkins aims to “balance competitive pricing with consistently high-quality offerings.”

After five years in business, jewelry designer and gemologist Samuel Tang knows that low prices don’t guarantee a sale. “But,” says Tang, “I’ve learned that your time is worth a certain amount of money, and you should always stick to your standards. Clients who appreciate your workmanship will always come back.”

Pricing myth #3: mathematical formulas are the only way to price your products right.

Reality check: Market research is the secret to a sound pricing strategy.When she launched Events Wholesale, Kim Hawkins assumed that keystone pricing (which means doubling the cost of wholesale) would be the formula for success. Instead, she found that market research was the secret to competitive pricing. “In the wholesale/discount world, sometimes it’s worth offering prices that are lower than keystone,” Hawkins says. “We’ll Google to see what our competitors are charging for specific products. If we need to charge 1.5 times wholesale or even less, we will. We’ll try to negotiate lower prices with our suppliers, too.”

Samuel Tang agrees that checking out the competition is important. “Go see what others are offering,” he says. “If your product is unique, don’t hesitate to increase the price.”

Pricing myth #4: Changing your price is difficult and often not worth the effort

Reality check: Use automated tools to easily experiment with—and master—the art and science of pricing.

Tang’s been experimenting with different price strategies for Joy Creations since day one. “I check the market daily to make sure our prices reflect the fluctuating value of precious metals and gemstones,” he explains. “I also adjust prices during certain seasons or months of the year when a particular color or style is more popular.”

Another worthwhile experiment?   If you choose to purchase a QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise subscription using the Monthly Payment Plan or QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise with cloud access, you elect to pay your annual subscription in equal payments over the course of 12 months. Purchasing an annual subscription for QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise commits you to a 12 month term. You must pay for all 12 months of the subscription in full based on the then current rate of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Right Networks performs backups of all cloud access data on a nightly basis and retains the back-ups for a rolling 90-day period in a protected offsite facility as an additional level of protection. There is no limitation to the size of a customer’s back-up. Customers are responsible for verifying the integrity of the hosted data at least every 90 days. Right Networks employs Snapshot technology to backup customer data. Snapshots are taken daily and then replicated to another physical Right Networks facility for Disaster Recovery. Right Networks uses top-tier data centers and multiple layers of redundancy within its infrastructure to provide 24×7 availability. However, availability can vary, is subject to occasional downtime and may change without notice. Right Networks encrypts all backup files and backup tapes. Virtual desktop connections are protected via TLS with a minimum of 128 bit encryption and authentication. Each customer has a unique Right Networks virtual desktop.   Working in two company files at once: Some functionality may be limited when running two files at once.
  
  PRIORITY CIRCLE
  
  Membership in Priority Circle and its benefits are available only to customers located in the 50 United States, including DC, who have an active, paid subscription to QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Eligibility criteria may apply to certain products. When customers no longer have an active, paid subscription, they will not be eligible to receive benefits.   Instant Deposit is an additional service offered by QuickBooks Payments subject to eligibility criteria and daily maximum limit. A debit card is required to set up. Payments are sent to the bank account linked to an eligible debit card usually up to 30 minutes. You can request available funds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To get your money on the same day, payments must be received in your QuickBooks account before 3 PM PT on a banking business day and instant deposit requests must be made before 3 PM PT. If payment is received after 3 PM PT, funds will be available for instant deposit request until 3 PM the following banking business day. Otherwise, payments will be processed at the normal speed. Deposit timing may vary for third party delays. 1% transaction fee is applied to the dollar amount of the instant deposit, in addition to the regular ACH or credit card rates. To see your current ACH and credit card rates, sign into the Customer Account Management Portal and select “See your product orders, transactions, and charges.” A QuickBooks Payments account is required which is subject to eligibility criteria, credit and application approval.   QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll subscription is included in Enterprise Gold and Platinum. Standard Enhanced Payroll subscription fees apply when adding to Enterprise Silver. Also, you can set the payment method for your scheduled Federal and State tax payments to E-Pay, and conveniently pay the appropriate tax agencies in QuickBooks Desktop. This is available in QuickBooks Payroll Enhanced and to selected states only.

  QuickBooks Desktop Assisted Payroll is not available in Indiana or Wyoming. It is included in the base subscription for Enterprise Diamond; $1 per employee per pay period. QuickBooks Desktop Payroll requires a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise updated to the most current maintenance release.   QuickBooks Time Elite time tracking: time tracking is included in the base subscription for Enterprise Diamond. Per-employee monthly fees apply. Each employee is $5 per month. Requires an internet connection.
  
  Sync with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise: Manual sync required.
  
  GPS tracking: GPS tracking enabled when employees are clocked in via the QuickBooks Time Elite mobile app. GPS points can be pulled at clock in and clock out, opening the app, switching job codes, and while on the clock. GPS points are not stored when employees are on a break, clocked out, or signed out of the app.
  
  Mobile time tracking: Requires downloading the QuickBooks Time Elite application, acceptance of the QuickBooks Time Elite Terms of Service and Privacy Statement, and an Internet connection. The QuickBooks Time Elite mobile app works with iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. Devices sold separately; data plan required.   SALESFORCE CRM CONNECTOR
  
  Salesforce CRM connector works with Salesforce Professional, Enterprise and Unlimited versions only; Salesforce is sold separately. The Salesforce CRM connector is a service provided by DBSync and is available as an add-on subscription to QuickBooks Enterprise Diamond.
  
  Salesforce CRM connector subscription: You are required to have an active, paid QuickBooks Enterprise Diamond subscription to be eligible for the Salesforce CRM connector. The Salesforce CRM connector subscription supports one company file per subscription; limited to one subscription purchased from Intuit. Your account on file will automatically be charged the then current list price on a monthly basis, starting at sign up, until you cancel. To cancel your Salesforce CRM connector subscription at any time, call 1-800-4-INTUIT or contact your account manager. Your cancellation will become effective at the end of the monthly billing period and your subscription will terminate at that time. You will not receive a prorated refund; your access and subscription benefits will continue for the remainder of the billing period. Cancellation or termination of QuickBooks Enterprise Diamond will result in termination of the Salesforce CRM connector subscription.   For QuickBooks Online: Microsoft Word and Excel integration requires Word and Excel 2010 SP2 and above or Office 365. Data can be imported from all versions of QuickBooks Desktop. Import from QuickBooks Desktop must be completed within the first 60 days of setting up your new QuickBooks Online account and 1060 days for the QuickBooks Online Accountant’s ‘Your books’ file. QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop are TLS1.2 compliant.
